The issues of the magazine analyze important historical stages in which the Pontic area is defined as a contact zone between the Aegean-Mediterranean and Transdanubian civilizations. These circuits consider, in turn, the Neolithic and Eneolithic cultures; elements of Greek-autochthonous cultural impact; the inclusion of the Pontic area in the Roman world as a stage preceding the expansion of Roman authority north of the Danube and into the intra-Carpathian space; the role of Christianity, late Romanism and the early Middle Ages. Epigraphic and numismatic materials are presented; secular reliefs and votive pieces; elements of architecture and Christian inventory; forms of urban organization, etc.

The authors of the articles are established names in the field. The magazine is published in a circulation of 250 copies annually, each issue containing around 500-600 pages. It has exchanges with over 100 specialized institutions abroad and is included in national and international databases: ErihPlus, CEEOL, AWOL. The Ancient World Online, Digital Library of Cultural Publications.

Pontica is an open access journal. The journal does not charge fees for editing and publishing articles.

The International Scientific Session "Pontica", which reached its 59th edition in 2026, has been the starting point from the beginning for the publication of specialized articles in the journal of the same name. Many of the communications held within the annual scientific event were later published in the pages of the journal. The event, with a long tradition in the scientific landscape, brings together renowned researchers and specialists from the country and abroad. The scientific communications held are usually organized within several thematic sections: Prehistory, Greco-Roman, Medieval, Numismatics, Modern - Contemporary, as well as on specialized panels, dedicated to current topics in historical and archaeological research. Every year, the "Pontica" International Scientific Session reconfirms the status of Constanța as an important center of research and scientific debate in the fields of history and archaeology and offers a relevant framework for the exchange of ideas, highlighting the place of this event in the sphere of scientific concerns of researchers, archaeologists, museographers, restorers and conservators from the country and abroad.
